Split the Trip Expenses Without the Spreadsheet

When a group trip ends, somebody has to sort out who paid for what and who owes whom. Your muse can keep the running ledger while the trip is happening, and it updates the balances on its own when payments come in.

What it does

Tell your muse what each person spent for the group, and it keeps a running balance sheet for every person: who paid, who owes, and how much. The strong part is the follow-through. When a payment notification lands in your email, like a Venmo receipt showing that someone sent you money, the muse folds it into the ledger and updates the balances without you entering anything. If it misunderstands how a cost was split, you correct it once and it keeps the correction going forward.

How to use it

1. Start one thread with your muse for the trip and tell it the ground rules: who is paying, and whether costs split evenly or per person.
2. Each time someone covers a group expense, tell the muse the amount and who paid. It adds it to the running totals.
3. Let your muse connect to the email where payment notifications arrive. When a payment email shows up, it updates the balance sheet itself.
4. Check the ledger at the end of the trip and send everyone the final numbers. One person pays the final settlements, no spreadsheet required.

What you need

• Your muse connected to your email, so it can see payment notifications arrive.
• One conversation thread for the trip, so the ledger stays in one place.

What to watch for

The muse does simple arithmetic, and you should spot-check the first totals against your own math before you trust it completely. It corrects well, but only if you correct it in plain words, like saying the cost splits among three payers rather than the full headcount. The automatic updating only works for payments it can see: cash changing hands off the record has to be entered by you. Nothing moves money here; the muse tracks balances and you settle up yourself.
