Skip the Junk Fees at the Dealership

確認済み 2026-10-11

A muse can research which car-dealer fees and add-ons are negotiable before you walk in, so you can spot the junk ones in the finance office and say no with confidence.

What it does

Buying a car has two negotiations: the price of the car, and the paper in the finance office. That second one is where the junk fees live. Tell the muse the car you are buying, the trim, and your ZIP code. It looks up which charges are genuinely required, like tax, title, and registration, and which ones are optional padding: documentation fees, VIN etching, paint protection, nitrogen in the tires, extended warranties dressed up as necessities. It can check what other buyers in your state reported paying, so a $799 "doc fee" gets flagged when the normal number is much lower. One buyer who had the muse do this prep walked out of the dealership having dodged the add-on pitches and saved over a thousand dollars. The muse prepares, you decide: nothing gets signed until you say so.

How to use it

  1. Give it the deal: "I am buying a 2024 Honda CR-V EX-L, finance office appointment Friday. My ZIP is 35016."
  2. Ask for the full breakdown: "List every fee and add-on I might see on the buyer's order. Mark each one required, negotiable, or junk."
  3. Ask for local context: "What are other buyers paying for documentation fees in my state?"
  4. Have it build your refusal sheet: "Write a one-page list: fees to refuse, ones to negotiate, and one-line responses I can use when they push."
  5. Have it do the math: "Calculate my out-the-door price with only the fees I accept, so I know the real number going in."

What you need

  • The car, trim, and dealership you are working with
  • Your ZIP code, since fee norms vary by state
  • The rule stated out loud: "Do not contact the dealership for me. Research and coaching only."

What to watch for

The muse cannot see the actual buyer's order until you show it. When the paper lands on the desk, photograph it and ask it to compare each line against your refusal sheet. Junk fees get renamed to survive your list, so have it check amounts, not just names. A refused add-on can come back as a discount somewhere else in the deal, so re-check the out-the-door total every time the numbers change. And never hand the negotiation to the agent itself: the value is in the preparation.
