Scrub Your Info Off Data Broker Sites
Search your name online and your address is probably sitting on sites you have never heard of. A muse can hunt those listings down across dozens of data broker sites and work through the opt-out forms for you, tracking what is submitted, confirmed, or still waiting.
What it does
Data brokers collect your name, address, phone number, and more, then sell access to it. Each one has its own removal process, and doing it yourself means working through dozens of sites with different forms and confirmation steps. Most people give up around site number four.
A muse does the grinding. It searches the broker sites for listings that match you, shows you the matches first, and then works through the opt-out requests one by one: filling forms, submitting removals, and keeping a running list of which requests are submitted, confirmed, or need a follow-up. Some sites send a confirmation email you have to click, so it flags those for you to finish.
How to use it
- Ask the muse to find data broker sites listing your personal information, and have it show you the matches before doing anything.
- Tell it to start submitting opt-out requests, and to stop and ask before sharing any personal detail beyond what the form requires.
- Keep the tracking list it maintains. Check back in a week or two for the ones marked as needing follow-up.
- Finish any email confirmations yourself; some sites will not process a removal without one.
What you need
- Your name and the details needed to identify your listings (city, for example)
- Patience: some removals take days or weeks to process
What to watch for
It is normal if this one feels strange. Having a program hunt down your own personal data is the whole point here, but stay in charge of it: review the matches first, never let it hand over more information than the form asks for, and disconnect it when the job is done. Also know that an opt-out does not guarantee the information stays gone forever. Brokers re-collect data, so a repeat sweep every few months is worth it.
