Read Your iCloud and Other IMAP Mail Through Your Muse

Verified 2026-11-01

If your email provider offers IMAP access, including iCloud Mail, your muse can search and read that mailbox for you, and this connection is read only, so it cannot send, delete, or move any message.

What it does

Not every mailbox is Gmail or Outlook. Many people keep years of mail with a provider that only offers IMAP, the standard way mail apps read one. Connect one and your muse can list your folders, show recent messages, search the full text of headers and bodies, and open one message with its list of attachments. That covers the jobs people hand over: finding the receipt from last spring, checking whether a reply ever arrived, or pulling one detail from a long thread. The limits are part of the design. This connection cannot send, draft, delete, move, or mark messages, and it cannot download attachments. Your password never passes through chat. Setup runs through a secure form, and for iCloud Mail you enter your address and an app-specific password made in your Apple account settings.

How to use it

  1. Connect the mailbox through the secure setup form. For iCloud Mail, make an app-specific password first, which needs two-factor authentication on the Apple account.
  2. Ask your muse to list the linked accounts and confirm it is reading the mailbox you meant.
  3. Start narrow: "Search my inbox for the insurance renewal from last month," rather than asking for everything at once.
  4. Open the message you need and ask for the detail, the date, or the amount in plain words.
  5. Do the sending and filing yourself in your own mail app, since this connection only reads.

What you need

  • A muse account
  • An email account with IMAP access, such as iCloud Mail
  • For iCloud Mail, an app-specific password from your Apple account, made through the secure form

What to watch for

  • Read only means read only. If a job needs a reply sent or a folder cleaned up, that part stays with you or with a different connected mailbox.
  • Attachments are listed, not opened. Your muse can tell you a message carries a file, and its name, but it cannot download or read the file through this connection.
  • Verification codes stay protected. Codes inside messages are held back by the connection, and your muse will not try to recover or repeat them.
  • One read returns a limited set of messages. For a buried item, give a sender, a date range, or a phrase so the search can land on it.
