Re-Sort Your Playlists by Decade and Genre

Verified 2026-10-13

A muse connected to Spotify can take a set of large, loosely sorted playlists and re-sort every song into exact decades and separate genres, turning years of rough piles into clean lists you can actually browse.

What it does

Many music libraries grow by mood or by broad era, with sixties and seventies songs mixed together and jazz, classical, and choral music sharing one list. A muse can read the songs in each playlist, look up the decade and genre for each track, and rebuild the playlists to a tighter rule. It can re-sort playlists of a few hundred songs each into exact decades with genres separated, the kind of job that is easy to put off for years. You approve the new structure before anything replaces the old lists, and the muse prepares, you decide.

How to use it

  1. Connect Spotify to the muse with access to your playlists.
  2. Name the playlists to re-sort and state the rule in plain words, for example exact decade first, then genre.
  3. Ask for a preview list first, showing where a sample of songs will land, and correct any genre calls you disagree with.
  4. Approve the rebuild for one playlist, check the result in Spotify, then approve the rest.
  5. Keep the original playlists until you have listened through the new ones and trust the sort.

What you need

  • A Spotify account connected to the muse
  • Playlists you own or can edit
  • A clear sorting rule, such as decade, then genre

What to watch for

Genre is a judgment call, and some songs sit between two genres or two decades, so spot check the preview before a full rebuild. Keep the originals as a backup until the new lists feel right. Very large media jobs have real limits: on libraries in the tens of thousands, a sorting run can declare albums complete while holding only a small share of the right pictures. Playlists in the hundreds of songs are a proven size. Larger libraries need smaller batches and close checking.
