Clean Up Your Computer Desktop and Downloads Folder

Desktops and Downloads folders collect everything: installers from last year, screenshots, documents saved in a hurry. The muse sorts the pile. It can take a desktop from dozens of items down to a few folders plus the files you actually use, and it checks before deleting anything important. The pattern is always the same: the muse proposes the sort, you approve the plan and any deletions, then it does the moving.

How to use it

1. Start with one place, the desktop or the Downloads folder, not the whole computer.
2. Ask for the inventory first: "List everything here, grouped by what it looks like: documents, photos, installers, screenshots, and things you cannot identify. Delete nothing."
3. Agree the folder plan in plain words: one folder for current work, one for documents to keep, one for installers, one for screenshots. Name them the way you talk, not the way a system would.
4. Approve the moves, and mark the files you use every day to stay on the desktop where they are.
5. Handle deletions as a separate step. Read the proposed delete list on its own, keep anything you are unsure about, and empty nothing the same day if the folder holds old tax, legal, or family files.

What to watch for

• Tidiness is not the goal by itself. A clean desktop that buries the one file you open daily is worse than the mess. Tell the muse which files are daily files before it starts.
• File names lie. A document called "scan one" may be a signed contract. The muse should open or preview anything unclear and ask, not guess and file it away.
• Deletion is the only step that cannot be undone easily, so it stays a separate approval, after the sort, never bundled into it.
• The muse prepares the plan and does the lifting, you decide what stays, what moves, and what goes.
