Build Your Own Money Tracker Instead of Paying for One

Verified 2026-10-27

Your muse can build you a simple personal money tracker shaped around your own accounts and categories, so you can drop a paid budgeting app and still see where your money goes each month.

What it does

Budgeting apps charge a monthly fee to show you your own spending, sorted into their categories. If your needs are plain (a monthly view of what came in, what went out, and what each category cost) a muse can build a small tracker that does just that, in the shape you ask for. You describe the accounts you hold and the categories you actually think in, and the muse builds the tracker around them: a place to bring in your bank and card statements, a running total per category, and a month-by-month view you can read at a glance. Because it is yours, the categories match your life instead of a template, and there is no subscription keeping the lights on.

How to use it

  1. Write down what you actually open the paid app for: most people use two or three views and ignore the rest. Those views are your spec.
  2. Tell the muse: "Build me a money tracker. It needs a monthly in and out view, totals for these categories, and a way to add this month's statements."
  3. Try the first version with one month of real statements. Check three totals against the statements themselves before you trust the rest.
  4. Fix the categories with the muse until the picture reads the way you think about your money.
  5. Set a monthly routine: add the new statements, read the picture, and ask one question, such as which category rose most.

What you need

  • A muse account
  • Bank and card statements you can download or share as files
  • A clear list of the categories and views you want

What to watch for

  • A home-built tracker is a viewing tool, not a bank. It does not move money, pay bills, or alert you in real time unless you build that in and test it hard.
  • Check the totals against your statements every month, not just the first. A changed statement format can quietly throw a category off.
  • Keep your own backup of the statements you feed it. If the tracker is ever lost, the statements are what let you or the muse rebuild it.
  • Cancel the paid app only after two monthly cycles have matched. The fee is worth paying until your tracker has earned the job.
