Bring Your Memory With You When You Switch

Verified 2026-10-18

Switching to a new assistant usually means starting over: the new one knows nothing about you, your routines, or how you like things done. Muse can import the memory from your old assistant, so the facts and preferences built up over months come with you instead of staying behind.

What it does

Most assistants let you export your chats as a single zip file, and Muse has an import built for exactly that file. You open Settings, go to Data controls, choose Import memory, and upload the zip. Muse then summarizes it into memory: the facts you told your old assistant, the preferences it learned, and the context that shaped its answers. After the import, that memory lives in one readable file inside Muse that you can open, fix, or trim line by line. It is normal if handing an assistant your history sounds strange. The control that matters is simple: you see everything it kept, and you decide what stays.

How to use it

  1. In your old assistant, find the export option in its data or privacy settings and download the zip of your chats.
  2. In Muse, open Settings, then Data controls, then Import memory.
  3. Upload the zip, choose Summarize into memory, and let it finish before relying on the answers.
  4. Open the memory file (the Assistant icon, then Identity, then Memory) and read what carried over.
  5. Correct anything wrong or out of date, and delete anything you do not want kept. A short, accurate memory beats a long, messy one.
  6. Ask Muse a few questions your old assistant would have answered from memory, and check the answers match what you expect.

What you need

  • A Muse account
  • An export of your chats from your previous assistant, as a zip file under 100 MB
  • Ten minutes afterward to read and clean up the imported memory

What to watch for

  • An export can hold more than you remember telling it, including details you no longer want kept. Read the imported memory before you treat the switch as done.
  • Imported facts can be stale. Addresses, jobs, and preferences change, and the import cannot tell which version is current. You can.
  • If something should not have come across, delete that line in the memory file, and use the forget request in chat for anything tied to a topic or person.
  • The training choice is a separate switch. Under Settings, then Data controls, you can turn off the use of your interactions to improve the models.
